Hatteras Lighthouse Facts

The Hatteras Lighthouse is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and keeps watch over the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The lighthouse as we see it today was activated on December 16, 1870. It has a granite base and a brick and iron structure consisting of 1,250,000 bricks. It was then, and still is today, the tallest lighthouse in America, standing 208’ tall. In 1973 it was given its distinctive black and white spiral striped “day mark”.  In 1999, the lighthouse was moved almost one mile from its original location to where it stands today and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
