Owl’s Head Light Station Facts

“Owl's Head ushers at once upon a scene almost too beautiful to profane with speech when we are looking at it, impossible to find language to do it justice when memory would summon it before us again.” Samuel Adams Drake, The Pine Tree Coast, 1891.

Located on the peninsula just below Rockland, Maine, Owl’s Head Light station sits high on a cliff guarding the entrance to Rockland Harbor. With a 30’ light tower, it rises 100 feet above sea level. Owl’s Head has witnessed many shipwrecks and has been the subject of much sea “lore”, including the story of the “frozen lover’s”, two poor souls whose ship wrecked on the point during the blizzard of 1850.
